Culling projects

On day one of the event Dr Christopher Worsley, CITI’s CEO, discussed the difference between stopping a project for good – or just stopping a project. Trimming expenditure on project portfolios makes sense in the current economic climate – but often the end result leaves executives frustrated, with wrong choices made, or subversive, with project activities continuing in ‘secret’.

For a major oil company, we analysed their portfolio and defined three scenarios for each candidate project: continue, de-scope or stop.

These were used to develop close out documents which also assessed how and if a project could realistically be re-started at a later date. It was quick, it was pain-free, and proved to be far better than approaches used before or elsewhere. In this seminar the techniques and the results will be shared.

Project categorisation

Best Practice User Group hosted some short workshop sessions. Steve Jones, Principal Consultant at CITI, presented on the topic project categorisation. In this session he explored the value of categorising projects, the method recommended by CITI to categorise projects, and gave a number of examples of how this approach has been applied to help clients prioritise the projects in their portfolio.
