A UK security service wanted to enhance their project management capabilities, so they engaged with CITI to help them. Most of their people have specialist skills, one of which is project management, and the service helps them develop and work flexibly, in ways that suit them, so that they can give their best.

The security service had in place a Centre of Excellence Programme designed to create overall improvements in project and programme (PPM) capability. Training had been in place for three years and many of the managers were either PRINCE2 and/or MSP accredited.

Working closely with the security service, CITI carefully planned an approach which would ensure a group of effective project managers at the end of the process. The key steps were:

As a result, a real community of professional project managers has now been formed. Complex projects are now routinely run by professional project managers, who feel able to handle them with confidence. They also recognise the benefits of sharing knowledge and ideas with other project professionals - exploring options, testing ideas, delivering results.
