Advanced Project Management http://www.citi.co.uk/advanced-project-management/ http://www.citi.co.uk/advanced-project-management/#comments Fri, 30 Aug 2013 10:55:10 +0000 http://www.citi.co.uk/?p=5269 You should have over five years’ experience of managing projects. If you have sufficient experience then you can use the work-based modules on this course to support your application for the APM’s Certificated Project Manager.

This course will give you the insights and techniques to become a professional project manager. Making your personal project performance more predictable and focusing your management actions on making your projects successful.

What are the course objectives?

The course starts by focusing your attention on what success looks like. The purpose of planning is to achieve these outcomes and nothing else. At this level, project management is often as much about power and politics as about plans and process. Consequently stakeholder management is a critical skill and is thoroughly explored. Once the nature of success is understood, the role of project disciplines in achieving that success is examined. It is the advanced application of the key project management disciplines that is at issue, and so the emphasis is on the appropriate use of management control techniques in complex projects. Finally, it is the integrating of all the factors and disciplines together into a coherent project strategy and a set of consistent actions that distinguishes good project managers from great ones. A major cross- functional project is provided – and the problem is to successfully construct and deliver the project. By its end, not only will you be more confident about the techniques, you will be confident about how to apply them in typically complex project environments.

What are the key topics?
  • Project success factors
  • Organising for projects
  • Scoping the projects
  • Stakeholder management
  • Advanced project disciplines
  • Business strategy
  • Investment appraisal
  • Resource management
What is the course format?

The approach taken is to challenge – making you reflect on how you discharge your responsibilities as an experienced, professional project manager. This course makes use of state-of-the-art simulation tools to facilitate accelerated learning through trial and error. Video is used to illustrate key learning points and prompt debate. Lectures are highly interactive, designed to encourage you to discuss your own issues with team members. Examples, drawn from CITI’s own experience of complex projects, are used to explore advanced project management issues.
The course has two taught modules and one work-based assignment. Run over a 4-6 week period you have the opportunity to use the techniques in the workplace and then to come back and discuss how they worked and what to do next.

What is the duration and cost of the course?

This is a three plus four day two module course.

The price is £2,975 plus VAT. (Accommodation is extra).

Successfully embedding change http://www.citi.co.uk/successfully-embedding-change/ http://www.citi.co.uk/successfully-embedding-change/#comments Fri, 22 Mar 2013 14:39:31 +0000 http://www.citi.co.uk/?p=4592 This course is ideal for:

  • Executives who are responsible for strategic change
  • Managers charged with delivering benefits
  • Change managers whose role involves making change happen
  • Project managers expected to deliver benefits from their projects
What are the course objectives?

You will have a clearly defined approach to planning and delivering change; a set of tested tools, and a powerful model which suggests the appropriate tools and techniques for your current change challenge.

What content is covered?

Projects deliver products and capabilities – it is change management that translates them into benefits that are valued by the organisation.

The course analyses the intimate relationship between projects and change, and how one affects the other. It looks at planning and sequencing impacts and what to put in place to ease the transition of roles and responsibilities as the impacts alter processes and peoples’ work patterns.

Translating the costs of a project into benefits involves overcoming organisational cultural barriers as well as altering competences and, often, political balances. Dealing with resistance to change is a common concern and case studies are reviewed looking at what works well. Motivating and energising managers and staff to invest in new approaches is fundamental to the role, and techniques and tricks are examined. But, perhaps the essential aspect is to understand the emotional impact and scale of the impacts necessary for the change to ‘stick’, and have a palette of stakeholder, communication and other tools from which to choose the most suitable for the circumstance.

What are the key topics?
  • The responsibilities of the change manager
  • Linking strategic outcomes to operational impacts
  • Assessing organisational readiness – the barriers to change
  • Creating the Change Definition Report
  • The stakeholder playing field – using power and politics
  • Developing, sequencing and executing a change plan
  • Performance measures
  • Transfer to operations
What is the course format?

This course is a mix of interactive presentations that stimulate and challenge delegates current views of change management. Casework is used to further develop understanding. Delegates receive a toolkit to take with them and apply in their workplace.

What is the duration and cost of the course?

This is a 2 day master class.

Creating valuable project and programme support offices http://www.citi.co.uk/creating-valuable-project-and-programme-support-offices/ http://www.citi.co.uk/creating-valuable-project-and-programme-support-offices/#comments Wed, 06 Feb 2013 13:38:21 +0000 http://www.citi.co.uk/?p=3194 Are you a manager or director who needs to ensure that the investment in a support office meets the needs of senior executives while delivering value to the business?

Are you charged with maximising value from the company’s project portfolio and programmes?

Do you support and guide project and programme managers as they carry out their delivery responsibilities?

Are you responsible for setting up / running a PSO?

If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions – this course is for you.

What are the course objectives?

This course will enable you to understand the principles of high value, and highly valued, project and programme support offices (PPSOs). It will help you to ensure that the investment made in these functions is repaid and that they meet both the needs of senior managers charged with maximising the value from the company’s project portfolio and the needs of project and programme managers as they carry out their delivery responsibilities. You will be given the knowledge, and more importantly the understanding, of how you can establish and run the type of PPSO most suitable to your organisation.

What content is covered?

The course looks at the approaches to adopt, and the traps to avoid, when establishing and positioning a project or programme office. It builds on CITI research into the most successful styles and levels of project and programme support offices and demonstrates how they can add value to portfolio management. You will learn to distinguish between project and programme support offices, identifying the different expectations, tools, techniques and roles they play. We also cover what needs to be done to convert a project office to a programme office and how that approach varies in different organisational structures. A working model of a PPSO with exemplar tools is used to illustrate how some of the ideas can be translated into effective actions for when you return to your workplace. This will help you to establish and run the ‘right’ type of PPSO for your organisation.

What are the key topics?
  • Stakeholder analysis and management
  • Types of support offices
  • Best practice examples
  • Monitoring & control functions
  • Analysis of your PPSOs and identification of improvements
  • Methods & quality assurance
  • Portfolio planning & monitoring
  • Programme and project support offices – the differences
  • Tracking benefits
  • Managing interdependencies in portfolios and programmes
What is the course format?

An interactive course, using a mixture of lectures, structured discussions, exercises and formal case work. You are invited to take part in benchmarking your current PSO which can then be used on your return to work to help you prioritise changes. Our discussions will be supported by a working model of a PSO that uses three toolkits to illustrate how some of the ideas can be translated into appropriate activities within your organisations.

What is the duration and cost of the course?

This is a 2 day master class.

£800 plus VAT.

Understanding project management http://www.citi.co.uk/understanding-project-management/ http://www.citi.co.uk/understanding-project-management/#comments Mon, 04 Feb 2013 12:45:02 +0000 http://www.citi.co.uk/?p=3030 Are you affected by projects and the way they are managed? Do you want to learn how to apply core principles of project management to your current job? Are you a work package manager, project office member, business manager or domain expert whose job is changed by projects? Are you new to projects? If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions – this course is for you.

What are the course objectives?

By attending this programme you will learn more about how projects are run, how project techniques and approaches can add value to your current role (be it in HR, finance, marketing, operations, etc.) and what factors make project management different from other types of management.

The course highlights the fundamental management, process and resource disciplines that make projects different from business as usual. It introduces the disciplines required in projects, particularly the need to schedule time, measure progress, communicate and handle variations to the plan caused by productivity variations, rework and process performance.

What content is covered?

The basic principles of project management are described and discussed. This is mainly in the context of how and where they differ from line management approaches. Differences between plans and schedules, the iterative planning process, the approaches to adopt when creating estimates for pieces of work, and the need for effective communication and reporting progress are all important topics covered. We also address roles and responsibilities in projects, project organisation and the value of method and its impacts. Product breakdown structures and activity networks are created on the course. Practical exercises will help to make points about scheduled activity, the need for structure, organisation and project control in highly constrained management environments, and what constitutes good project behaviour.

What are the key topics?
  • Identifying projects
  • Defining the project objectives
  • Planning
  • Communication
  • Monitoring and control
  • Team dynamics
  • Creating work packages
  • Creating an activity network
  • Estimating
  • Health checks
What is the course format?

In this short course the style is ‘investigative’ and ‘instructive’ – drawing out what you already know about projects and providing short, sharp inputs of knowledge and approaches via presentations. It also offers opportunities to practice and experiment so your learning can add most value to your current or future project. This approach uses a series of case work exercises and short tutor-led discussions to highlight key learning points. A general business scenario is used for case work allowing you to work together in syndicates, taking turns to be the project manager, in order to define and plan a project.

What is the duration and cost of the course?

This is a 2 day course.
