What are the course objectives?

The course starts by focusing your attention on what success looks like. The purpose of planning is to achieve these outcomes and nothing else. At this level, project management is often as much about power and politics as about plans and process. Consequently stakeholder management is a critical skill and is thoroughly explored. The primary purpose of this course is to prepare delegates for the successful completion of the APMP two-hour, closed book, examination. The course covers the shortened syllabus of 25 of the APM body of knowledge (BoK) subject areas and in undertaking this course candidates learn a huge amount in a short time about the theory, techniques and application of project management.

The course is structured around the 25 APM BoK topics, which are determined by the syllabus for the APMP examination. The focus is on providing knowledge, principles and best practices in project management. APMP assesses the candidate’s breadth of knowledge in all areas of project management, from strategic and commercial implications, to the technical, organisational, and people management skills required to participate effectively within a project team. The course is made up of tutor-led sessions with practical examples, group syndicate work, homework, and solution notes. Translating the costs of a project into benefits involves overcoming organisational cultural barriers as well as altering competences and, often, political balances. Dealing with resistance to change is a common concern and case studies are reviewed looking at what works well. There are two levels of accreditation: Foundation and Practitioner. The course covers syllabus to Practitioner level. It is a very intensive course and we have organised the programme to meet the different learning styles of different individuals. The syllabus is covered in the first three days, enabling the Foundation exam. The fourth day focuses on developing a deeper understanding of how to implement and manage change, as well as preparing for the Practitioner exam on the fifth day.

This course will enable you to understand the principles of high value, and highly valued, project and programme support offices (PPSOs). It will help you to ensure that the investment made in these functions is repaid and that they meet both the needs of senior managers charged with maximising the value from the company’s project portfolio and the needs of project and programme managers as they carry out their delivery responsibilities. You will be given the knowledge, and more importantly the understanding, of how you can establish and run the type of PPSO most suitable to your organisation.

It builds on CITI research into the most successful styles and levels of project and programme support offices and demonstrates how they can add value to portfolio management.
