Congress
2000 - 15th IPMA World Congress in Project Management On Tuesday, HRH the Princess Royal addressed the Congress and chose as her topic 'The Cranfield Trust' an organisation that helps charities to run projects. The Princess Royal identified a need for project managers to volunteer to support charities. David Constantine, co-founder and director of Motivation, a charity that builds wheelchairs out of local materials in developing countries, then gave an illustrated talk on the work the charity has carried out over the last nine years. On Wednesday evening as part of the Gala Dinner, over £1000 was collected by the delegates to give to Motivation. Four parallel Streams of papers were run on each day. On Tuesday, the first day, Thomas Docker, Director of CITI and Donald Heath OBE Chairman of the APM, co-chaired the Profession Stream. This proved to be by far the most popular Stream with a number of delegates having to stand due to a shortage of space. The Stream remained the most popular throughout the Congress. On Wednesday two papers were presented in the Profession Stream by CITI. The first was given by Christopher Worsley CEO of CITI, and was entitled, 'The Project Manager's Environment'. It was extremely well received. One delegate made the observation that he meant to attend a different Stream but found the paper so interesting that he stayed for the whole session. The research had been undertaken by Damian Leonard of University of Limerick, as part of his Masters in Project Management. Click here to read the Red Paper on which this Congress paper was based. (34k PDF file) On the Friday, Christopher Worsley ran a highly successful one-day workshop on programme management in which he clearly distinguished programmes from portfolios and large projects. This was particularly valuable as it was clear during the Congress that there was considerable uncertainty expressed by delegates on what constituted a programme. The next Congress is to be held in Berlin in 2002, CITI is hoping to have an active part in the planning for this important event. Dotcom
